{art inspiration: star charts}

I think we all collectively swooned after seeing Lauren Gold's office featured in Lonny magazine:

There were so many elements I fell for; the peacock blue walls, that gorgeous desk & brass stool, and the artwork! This particular piece is called 'Biological specimen #5' by New York artist Gary Schneider, and I love that it resembles the 1930's constellation charts. You can also find it hanging in Thomas O'Brien's living room ...

Thomas O'Brien also owns a 1930s Rand McNally vintage star map originally created to teach school children about the stars and heavens. He snatched his for a mere $75, but they normally can be found for several hundreds of dollars. I love that he chronicles all the different spots he's hung it throughout the years on his own blog here.

You may be more likely to come across smaller vintage pieces like these ones he has in his kitchen {love the punch of black in an all white space}:

Coveting a star map? It turns out Restoration Hardware used to carry this one, but it is no longer available. After some searching I found a second source, The Municipal Prints Company, who carry both black and deep navy versions inspired by the vintage star charts of the 1930's for only $175 for a 36 x 36 inch print! That is a great size, on the wishlist it goes!
